How to Dropship with Shopify in Malaysia

You might be thinking, “Well, dropshipping might be working well in other huge markets out there, but is it a viable business model in Malaysia?”

Again, yes, it is. And I’ll tell you why.

First, the eCommerce revenue in Malaysia has consistently grown since 2016, as shown from data compiled by Statista.

Shopify malaysia

Statista expects these revenues to increase to $9.6 billion (about 40 billion ringgits) this year. That’s massive potential. And you could participate in that growth.

Second, internet penetration in this country is considered higher than neighboring countries like Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand (it’s 88%!). Also, Malaysians spend an average of eight hours and 27 minutes online each day

Think about the missed opportunity to present your products to an engaged user base. What could reaching this market base do for your business?

Now that we’ve established that dropshipping in Malaysia using Shopify is a good business idea, let’s dive right into the details of how you can pull it off.

STEP1: It Starts With Choosing a Niche Market In Malysia

Wouldn’t it be great if you could sell anything you wanted and make money? I agree: that would be great. Unfortunately, things in this world are never that easy.

If you wish to make money in anything (even drop shipping in Malaysia), you’ve got to offer the market what it wants.

And that’s why the first step in dropshipping always begins with product research and niche market selection. You’ve got to locate a product with a high chance of performing well.

And how do you do that?

How to Identify a Market and Choose a Niche For Shopify Dropshipping in Malaysia

Choosing a market niche seems complicated, but it isn’t as complicated as it seems. Here are some ideas on how to find products to sell to fast-track the process of dropshipping with Shopify in Malaysia.

1: Best-selling products

The most obvious way to choose a niche and identify a product that the market wants is by identifying what people are currently buying on popular marketplaces like Amazon.com, Aliexpress.com, Alibaba.com, Lazada.com, Shopee.com, LeLong.com, and other popular marketplaces in Malaysia and around the world.

Here is how to do that:

Method 1: YouTube

As a beginner on a budget, the best place to start is YouTube.

Simply search ‘hot products to dropship now’ or something closely related. You want to get the most recent videos to ensure you can easily ride on the trend before so many people start stocking the items.

Some great YouTube channels for finding hot products include the following:

When you find a product you would like to dropship, check whether it is already selling in Malaysia through Lazada.com, Shopee.com, LeLong.com, and other popular eCommerce stores.

Method 2: Use the tools the pros use to find products other people have not yet discovered

Most popular drop shippers on YouTube use software to discover the hot selling products they showcase to their audience. These tools have many advantages like helping you:

  • Discover new social media advertising campaigns that are gaining traction so you can jump right in before so many people come in
  • Spy on eCommerce stores social media ads – from Facebook ads to Instagram and TikTok ads. This will help you know which products will end up attracting a high amount of engagement and conversions
  • Find trending Shopify products in a few clicks, saving you hours of guesswork
  • Help you discover the best suppliers for the hot products you will find, suppliers who will help you cut shipping times that you would otherwise get on AliExpress, for example, if you are dropshipping from China.
  • Generate unique social media ads in just a few clicks, saving you the trouble of having to do it yourself

Some popular tools you can use for the job are:

NOTE: These are paid tools, but some have a free trial period with limited features.

PRO TIP 1: Before committing to a paid option, especially if you are on a budget and are still getting started, check out the social media handles of these tools; they often share some of the best-selling products. You will be amazed at just how much free content is out there

After finding a product you are interested in selling, go to Amazon.com and search for the product. You want to find the reviews customers have given for the product. Also, go to Aliexpress to check the number of orders the product has received over time. You want something that is already selling well.

As you do all this, consider your passion and interest.

2: Passion and interest

A word of advice before we go any further: there are plenty of items out there that have massive selling potential. But, if you wish to build a sustainable Shopify dropshipping business that does well long-term in the Malaysian market, I recommend going with products that hold some passion or interest in you.

As you get started, though, sell what’s in demand and what you can market. You don’t know which product will sell well yet, so I advise going with anything that meets the criteria we’ll discuss next.

The ideal criteria

I recommend considering the following characteristics:

  • Weight: The product should weigh 2 pounds or less. The lighter the product, the less it costs to fulfill and ship.
  • No expiration: Stay away from perishable products. They could lead to terrible losses if and when the expiration date comes around.
  • Small size: Again, this has to do with the shipping issue. If your product is bulky and takes up a lot of space, you generally pay more, thereby diminishing your returns.
  • Minimal liability: Great products carry as minimal liability as possible.
  • Minimum moving parts: Avoid complex products that could quickly develop problems, requiring people to return them. Electronics are a good example.
  • Emotional attachment: If a product leads to an emotional buying decision, the better.
  • Generic: This last point is an absolute must. Remember, you’ll want a product that you can quickly slap your brand logo on and make yours.

Finding the right product that fits these criteria won’t be easy. But trust me, there are countless products out there that are a good match. It simply takes work and patience to find them, and with the tools mentioned earlier, you should find one pretty fast.

Once you locate the right product to sell, it’s time to find a source for it.

STEP2: Finding The Right Product Supplier

Here are some popular dropship suppliers within Malaysia that you can rely on:

  • Bestfulfill: https://bestfulfill.com/
  • SaveValue2U: https://www.savevalue2u.com.my/
  • Dropshipmurah: https://www.dropshipmurah.com.my/shop-sync
  • Komuten: https://www.kumoten.com/
  • Sweet Home Planet: https://www.sweethomeplanet.com.my/
  • A Fashion Story: https://www.a-fashion-story.com/
  • Wholesale2B: https://www.wholesale2b.com
  • Chubby Bitsy: www.chubbybitsy.com
  • Ecubestore: https://ecubestore.com/
  • Bullmart: https://bullmart.com/

These are not the only dropship suppliers in Malaysia. You easily find more suppliers by going to Shopee and Lazada, then searching whatever product you wish to sell (I assume you already have a product), then dropship.

You will not compete with the sellers on Shopee and Lazada. When you find a local supplier from these marketplaces, set up a store so that you can get people to buy from you. Malaysia has over 32 million people —there are more than enough people to buy your stuff. All you need to do is drive traffic to your online store. If you have something that the masses want, they will buy from you, even if you are dropshipping from someone selling on Shopee or Lazada.

If you wish to dropship from abroad, you can opt for:

CJ Dropshipping is better than Aliexpress because you can get faster delivery times, custom branding, and other great things.

TIP: If you intend to dropship from China, I recommend only drop shipping items not available in Malaysia and non-essential, functional, cool items that people would not mind waiting for over two weeks to have delivered.

Now that you have a supplier for your product, the rest of the process is simply setting up your store.

STEP3: Set Up Your Shopify Store

Shopify is the best platform for creating an online store for non-techies, and there are thousands of online tutorials on how to get started (there is a 14-day trial). YouTube videos are the best: you only need to search “How to set up a Shopify store” on YouTube to find step-by-step tutorials.

There are also tutorials on exporting products from some of the dropship suppliers I mentioned earlier seamlessly to your Shopify store. Be sure to check those out if you don’t want to go through the whole process manually, which is especially handy if you are adding very many products to your Shopify store.

You can refer to some of these YouTube tutorials:

If you are dropshipping from AliExpress, use the Oberlo app by Shopify to export products.

TIP: I would recommend starting with a general Shopify store selling different products. From there, you can start narrowing down to a specific category of items (niche) once you’ve found some winning product categories. And if you have a clear winner, narrow down to a one-product store (where you sell just one product.

If you want a decent conversion rate from the traffic you send to your Shopify store, you’ll need to create a quality listing on your sales pages.

So, what makes for a quality listing?

How to optimize your listings

You’ll need to focus on the following critical elements of the page:

  • A compelling title or headline: Your headline should make an implicit promise that makes the rest of your sales page copy a must-read.
  • Compelling images and videos: Be sure to create a gallery of crisp-sharp images taken at great angles that look stunning. Also, include images that show the product in use. This will give anyone visiting your Shopify store a good perspective of how the product looks and can solve their everyday problems.
  • An excellent description: Here, you don’t just want to describe what the product is merely or the features it contains. Instead, please focus on the benefits it will bring the consumer. How will it solve their problems? Why should they care?
  • Valuable bonuses: Who doesn’t love freebies? Remember that day you walked into your local supermarket and quickly grabbed that product that came with a free knife, spoon, bathing soap, or toy? Exactly. So why not offer an inexpensive gift to go along with your product? It’ll undoubtedly boost your conversions. For the Malaysian market, make sure to offer free shipping and possibly find another way to give freebies.
  • Social proof: Online, people, look to the opinions of others before they make a purchase. It’s just the nature of the medium. This comparison is why it’s essential to ensure that your product has reviews that people view. In the beginning, you might want to offer your product at a special price to generate the traffic that gets you the reviews you need.

Now, structuring sales pages that convert well usually takes some expertise, and as a beginner, you might have some trouble figuring out what works.

So, here’s a quick tip you could use:

Look for the bestsellers in your product category, and model the appearance of their sales pages. They have a proven model that works for the same market you target, so why not leverage their success?

You can refer to this YouTube tutorial.

Once you have your Shopify store set up with products added, the only thing that remains now is promoting your products and marketing your store.

STEP4: Promoting/Marketing Your Shopify Products

So, how do you market/promote your products? Simple; there are both free options and paid options.

The option you choose will depend on your budget and how fast you want to see results. If you are on a budget and want to take things slow, you can spend time marketing your products on social media. In this case, post your product media (video and images) on some popular Malaysian Facebook groups where people buy and sell stuff. You should be able to generate leads easily from that.

If you really want to fast-track your success rate, paid advertising is the way to go. Social media advertising is a vast topic that we shall talk about in other posts, but I will provide resources. The biggest platforms for eCommerce are Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

STEP5: Scale and Grow Your Dropshipping Business

Here are some ideas:

  • Move from general store to niche store and then one product store – I already mentioned this earlier, but I’ll reiterate. When you find winning products, create a niche store that’s a one-product store for your bestselling product(s).
  • Track, track, track: Leverage the power of Pixels to track your ad performance to the last cent. You can learn about Pixels from freely available tutorials.
  • Brand your products: If you’ve found a winning product, consider differentiating your product from the competition by branding. The best way to go about it is to private label your products and packaging to ensure your product stands out in the market.
  • Move from dropshipping to operating a fulfillment center: If there’s a steady demand for your product(s), you can now cut the middle man that is Aliexpress and the dropshipping suppliers in Malaysia and go straight to the manufacturers to get factory prices. With that, you can reduce costs and stock a certain number of items in your fulfillment warehouse (even your house is okay). Many third-party fulfillment centers in Malaysia can easily handle everything for your business to make it more hands-off for you. Some of them include:

UR Store: https://www.urstore.com.my/

AllSome: https://www.allsome.com

Tresgo: https://tresgo.my/

Flybear: https://flybear.com.my/

Istoreisend: https://www.istoreisend.com/

  • Offer stellar customer services: As long as you have good customer service, handle refunds and returns well, and have clearly communicated your delivery times (to ensure customers don’t have to wait any longer than you had promised), you will be in business!

Conclusion

As you’ve seen, starting a Shopify dropshipping business in Malaysia can be profitable and is not that challenging to do when you have a step-by-step plan such as the one we’ve discussed in this article.

Remember that if the process gets overwhelming at one point or the other, you can always consult an experienced drop shipping agency that will help you handle everything related to product sourcing, warehouse, and order fulfillment for your Shopify store.
